This doesn't completely answer OP's question but there is way to download a stream from beginning to a specific duration without having to download the complete stream. Since YouTube provides resume support, we could request for partial content using the Range header.

Downloading any middle portion from the video should also be possible in this way but is going probably way much trickier because YouTube places the metadata at the beginning of the stream (in the first few bytes) and without it being present in the downloaded media, the stream won't play at all.
Further question: if you do want the separate video and audio formats, could you download part of each separately (using ^c as here), and then merge them manually? I don't think it willl work for some formats.
YouTube is ridiculously restrictive with their videos, they split the audio and video streams into different files, and they track you/sell your data; therefore, one could have difficulties with the method of downloading it partly then hitting Ctrl+C.

YT-DLP is a free and open-source software project created (as a fork) from the now-discontinued project, youtube-dlc. yt-dlp is based on the popular YouTube downloader, youtube-dlc, but now comes with additional features and improvements. This software is basically used to download videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and other similar websites.
As you might already know, yt-dlp is a command-line tool, so to use it (in Windows or Linux), you will have to go thorugh the command prompt or terminal. If you have already downloaded, installed it along with its dependencies, go ahead and open your terminal.
With this configuration file, you can automate your entire youtube download process. This saves you time, as you no longer have to enter configuration for each line of video download. The configuration file will use your personalized download format for the process.
Another way you can optimize your download process with yt-dlp is to use bashrc files. These files contain shell (command-line interface) settings for the Bash shell. The bashrc file is executed every time a new terminal session is opened, and it can be used to configure various settings and aliases for the shell. The simplest usage of -o is not to set any template arguments when downloading a single file, like in yt-dlp -o funny_video.flv " " (hard-coding file extension like this is not recommended and could break some post-processing).
It may however also contain special sequences that will be replaced when downloading each video. The special sequences may be formatted according to Python string formatting operations ( -style-string-formatting), e.g. %(NAME)s or %(NAME)05d. To clarify, that is a percent symbol followed by a name in parentheses, followed by formatting operations.
Output templates can also contain arbitrary hierarchical path, e.g. -o "%(playlist)s/%(playlist_index)s - %(title)s.%(ext)s" which will result in downloading each video in a directory corresponding to this path template. Any missing directory will be automatically created for you.
Deprecation warning: Latest versions of yt-dlp can stream multiple formats to the stdout simultaneously using ffmpeg. So, in future versions, the default for this will be set to -f bv*+ba/b similar to normal downloads.
